It's not the first time they have been there, but The Bahamas is happy to be back in Division One of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Americas Region after hosting the week-long Pepsi Americas Division Two Development round robin tournament last week at Haynes Oval and Windsor Park where they finished tied with Panama with a record of 3-1.
The Bahamas captured the ICC Americas Division two title, despite losing their final match, a thriller to Suriname by three wickets on Saturday.
Suriname won the toss and elected to field in a match reduced to 35-overs due to wet grounds. Bahamas had a shaky start perhaps still thinking about the result of the last Division Two event when they fell apart in a match versus Surinam.
A 71-run fifth wicket stand between Ryan Tappin (63), and Jon Barry (33), got The Bahamas back on track and they finished with a decent 186/9 in their 35-overs. Suriname lost an early wicket starting their chase but very steady contributions right down their batting roster saw the visitors hit their target with nine balls to spare.
This is the second tournament that Suriname has defeated the Bahamas in the final match of the tournament, this time however Bahamas had a net run rate that secured the tournament title for them and promotion to Division One in Bermuda later this year.
In the second match on the final day at Windsor Park, Panama easily won over the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Panama's skipper Irfan Tarajia had a brilliant tournament and Saturday he continued to play well. In the Turk and Caicos innings he captured 5-39 and then scored a classic 50 which included five fours and four sixes.
His efforts earned him Man of the Match as Panama breezed by their target with seven wickets intact. For the Turks and Caicos, Rohan Ash (52), and Captain Ebbion Caesar (65) led the way in establishing a target of 193 all out in the 39th over. Panama lost only three wickets in reaching their target as Irfan Tarajia (50) was supported by S.Chohan (45) and N.Bhakta (54)
The Bahamas Cricket Association held a special closing ceremony and presentation night for the visiting teams. Brazil, who finished last, had the honour of capturing three of the four individual awards.
Bahamas will be promoted to the Division One tournament scheduled for Bermuda in May/June 2010, while Brazil will be demoted to Division 3 and will to try to re-qualify for Division Two next year. Source: www.jonesbahamas.com Posted: Feb. 8, 2010 More Stories |
