National Heroes Day will be celebrated throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands on Monday, May 27, 2013.

The Department of Culture, in collaboration with the Honors and Awards Committee, will mark the day with a Wreath Laying Ceremony in honor of the Late, Hon. J.A.G.S. McCartney, the first Chief Minister and National Hero of these islands.

The ceremony will take place at the J.A.G.S. McCartney Memorial Site in Grand Turk beginning at 8:30am.

His Excellency Governor Ric Todd, Premier Hon. Dr. Rufus Ewing and Leader of the Opposition Mrs. Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson, are among those expected to attend and bring greetings.

The Culture Department has issued an invitation to all members of the community to attend the ceremony. All guests are to be seated by 9:00am.

The Royal Turks & Caicos Islands Police are confirming that the body of a woman was found along Millennium Highway on the dirt road leading to Crystal Bay, on Sunday June 16, 2013 sometime after 6AM. The Police said a jogger discovered the body in a nearby bush area a few yards from the roadside along Crystal Bay Road on Sunday morning. After Police were alerted about the incident, they proceeded to the scene where they commence investigations and later removed the body from the scene. The Royal Turks & Caicos Islands Police are appealing to members of the TCI public to be more responsible while online. Social media is a great way to keep the TCI public informed of incidents in our country and thus is a powerful tool not to be abused. is Police Public Relations Officer, Audley Astwood, said the posting of erroneous and incorrect reports on social media sites have impacted victims in a very negative way. He did not identify any particular case but said that social media sites and the popular BlackBerry messenger platform were bombarded with various stories about the death of a woman recently. All Police Stations have been sanitized +
The Royal Turks & Caicos Islands Police are confirming that a number of officers were tested for Tuberculosis recently. Acting Superintendent Kendal Grant has confirmed that officers are still being tested as appointments are scheduled for Tuesday 18th, June 2013. All Police stations were sanitized according to advisory of Health Officials and Police officers are continually being briefed. An inspection of Five Cays Police Station is scheduled for next week. Ban on Poultry and Pork Products from Dominican Republic +
The Ministry of Environment and Home Affairs is reminding the public that there is a ban on the importation of poultry and pork products and live pork and poultry from the Dominican Republic (DR) into the Turks and Caicos Islands. The ban was implemented in 2008 as a result of outbreaks of a low pathogenic strain of avian influenza (H5N2) and Classical Swine Fever (CSF) in the DR, and has remained in place due to the inability of that country to provide evidence to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) that it is disease free.
