Talk about a good start to a series.

West Indies beat England by 15 runs in the opening day match of the One-Day International series 28 February, in Antigua.

The Windies recovered from a start of 45-4to make 269-6 in their 50 overs.

Michael Lumb’s century led the tourists’ chase but the middle of the order faltered as the Windies take the first of three ODIs.

The second ODI begins Sunday.

National runner Jereem Richards has opted out of his place on the 4x400 metres relay team for the upcoming International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Indoor Championships, leaving management with little choice but to deduce the national contingent to four athletes. Three West Indies legends were knighted at a special ceremony during the interval of the first one-day international against England. Former skipper Richie Richardson, 52, and pace bowlers Curtly Ambrose, 50, and Andy Roberts, 63, were all honoured by their native Antigua. It takes the total number of West Indian cricketing knights to 11. The only previous Antiguan cricketer to be knighted was Sir Viv Richards, after whom Antigua's new stadium is named. Between them, Richardson, Ambrose and Roberts played in 231 Tests and 456 one-day internationals, while all had spells in English county cricket. West Indies made use of a solid opening partnership between Dwayne Smith and Kieran Powell to beat Ireland by four wickets in their one-off One Day International at Sabina Park yesterday. This was West Indies’ second victory on the trot following an 11-run win against the same opponent in a Twenty20 International match on Friday to draw the two-match series. West Indies started in a hurry with Smith and Powell attacking the Irish bowlers and sharing 100 runs for the first wicket. Police were called to a nightclub by a photographer late on Saturday after he was allegedly assaulted by AC Milan striker Mario Balotelli following an argument, according to reports. Balotelli was ruled out of his side's away match at Sampdoria yesterday due to injury. Domestic news agency ANSA said Balotelli travelled to Liguria, on Italy's north-west coast, to watch a football match on Saturday in which his brother Enoch Barwuah was playing. Jason Collins became the first openly gay man to play in the NBA on Sunday night, wearing a Brooklyn Nets uniform in a game against the Los Angeles Lakers. Brazil Plans Massive Security Operation for World Cup +
Brazilian authorities say more than 150,000 security personnel will be deployed across the country during this year's World Cup football tournament. Officials on Thursday briefed reporters and coaches from 25 of the 32 teams competing in the tournament in June and July. One-hundred 50-thousand public security personnel will be diverted to World Cup duty, helped by 20,000 private security officers. Military officials say the army also would be called on if needed to keep law and order. Brazil is spending more than $800 million for security at this year's matches.
